Announcing a real treat for musical theatre fans – the Tony award-winning musical, Sondheim’s Company, is screening in cinemas worldwide on 15 March. This New York Philharmonic concert production, recorded live at the Avery Fisher Hall, has an all-star cast with some of the hottest names from American stage and TV. A must–see musical theatre event, it will be followed by a LIVE Q&A with the Emmy-winning actor Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), who plays the part of Robert.

Sondheim’s Company is the bittersweet story of Robert – a single man unable to commit fully to a steady relationship, let alone marriage – the five married couples who are his best friends, and his three girlfriends. Staged as a series of vignettes linked by a celebration for Robert’s 35th birthday, the musical throws a comic spotlight on the eternal issues faced by people in relationships.

Did you know that Sondheim appeared twice on the iconic BBC radio programme, Desert Island Discs? His first appearance was on 16th August 1980, and his second was twenty years later, on 31st December 2000.

You can listen to the 2000 recording on the BBC website, and read Sondheim’s choices for both programmes.  You can also see which other guests chose Sondheim songs as part of their selections, which is rather fascinating!

Just go to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/desert-island-discs/find-a-castaway and search for Stephen Sondheim.
