Possible reprieve for Derby Playhouse?

The Stage reports that "Derby Playhouse has four weeks to save itself, after a deal was reached between Arts Council England and the theatre’s artistic director to prevent the company’s immediate liquidation.
The theatre had been faced with permanent closure, following the arts council’s decision to claim back more than £1 million of funding from the venue after the company had gone into administration. ACE has now withdrawn that claim and committed to only renewing it if Derby Playhouse Ltd goes into liquidation or receivership.
. . .The playhouse first closed at the end of last year, after the company encountered financial problems and the city council refused to advance the venue its grant. Subsequently, Arts Council England removed the playhouse’s regular funding. Derby Playhouse Limited was forced into administration and ACE instigated a claim for more than £1 million of subsidy to be returned to it, as a creditor of the theatre.
Because it was owed more than all the theatre’s other creditors combined, it was able to effectively veto a proposed rescue plan put forward by the company. Following this action, Edwards, who was also a creditor of the theatre as well as its artistic director, issued a legal challenge against ACE’s claims.
The arts council has said it has withdrawn its claim, while the company is in administration, to avoid a “costly court process”.
Derby Playhouse chairman Jonathan Powers commented: “The board is grateful for the courage and tenacity of Stephen Edwards in taking this action. Thanks to him we are now back where we were in February. We have a plan to get the theatre up and running in the autumn. It will be a leaner and battle-hardened organisation. It will need support and commitment from the people of Derby and Derbyshire and from the theatrical profession to ensure that world-class professionally produced theatre can once again thrive in Derby, on our stage, in our building, for the next 60 years.” "

Although sadly lacking Edward Seckerson's sure hand and style this series, Counterpoint did have one bright spot this week - a round on Bernstein and Sondheim. You can hear the programme via Listen Again for the rest of this week. The eagle-eyed amongst you will spot in this link that, according to the BBC, this is a comedy programme!

Elaine Stritch at Liberty comes back to London

Elaine Stritch is bringing her one-woman show, Elaine Stritch at Liberty, back to London six years after its sell-out run at the Old Vic. It is to have a limited season from July 31st to August 10th 2008 at the Shaw Theatre.
The Broadway legend took London’s Old Vic theatre by storm in 2003 – the show had already triumphed in New York, where it won a Tony Award. It triumphed again at the 2004 Emmy Awards, winning two top honours.
The riveting one-woman show is sensational, poignant and incredibly funny. Stritch talks and sings her way through 50 years in American theatre and tells her story. “You’ve got to be real to be funny,” she says early on in the show and she is. Her comic timing is impeccable and her anecdotes are priceless – from a disastrous date with Marlon Brando while they were at drama school together, to failing to get the star role in The Golden Girls because she insulted the writer.
Stritch is also uncompromisingly honest. She admits to having missed most of her life because of her struggle with drink. When she sums herself up as “an existential problem in tights” it is impossible not have huge admiration for a woman who, at the age of 82, can appear on stage in white shirt and tights and knock an audience dead. Elaine Stritch at Liberty was broadcast in the UK on BBC4.
Tickets are available from the box office: 0870 033 2600 or online

Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Starring Anthony Perkins and Charmian Carr
Kritzerland is proud to announce its latest release - the original television soundtrack to Stephen Sondheim's Evening Primrose. Originally aired only once on the ABC Stage 67 television series, Evening Primrose was an original musical written especially for television by Mr. Sondheim and James Goldman, from the short story by John Collier. Anthony Perkins stars as a poet who has renounced the world and who has decided to live in a department store and write poetry, He soon discovers he is not alone, that there is a secret society which has lived in the department store for years. Charmian Carr co-stars as the girl he falls in love with. The score features the songs "If You Can Find Me, I'm Here", "I Remember", "When", "Take Me To The World", as well as some reprises and all of the background score, fourteen tracks in all.
Norman Paris conducts, and the musical associate is David Shire. This is the first commercial release of the soundtrack and itwill be released in early May.
The Society is hoping to organise a buying copies of the CD from America for members.
